Location: Transylvania, Apuseni, Maramures, Bucovina, Banat, Danube Delta, Romania
While Transylvanian castles and Dracula are legendary there is a lot more to do and see in Transylvania. Bran, Peles and Corvin castles, Sighisoara, Brasov and Sibiu are the places most people go to when they visit Transylvania. But besides those there is a lot more medieval and less touristy places to see like the fortified churches situated in villages. While in the village you can learn about the life of peasants, learn pottery, icon glass painting, wood carving, visit a sheepfold, milk a cow and make cheese. Also, in the countryside you ca do horse-riding or biking. Apuseni region also has a lot to offer, there a lot of caves, beautiful mountains, mining heritage - few foreigners go there, probably because there are no UNESCO heritage sites but it's a beautiful region. Maramures and Bucovina regions on the other hand, have UNESCO heritage sites and are much more popular among travelers but if you are looking for the authentic places, you need to dig deeper. Other regions to consider are Banat in the West, Szekler Land and Danube Delta. So I can help you craft a plan for 5 to 20 days including all those regions, suggest transportation, accommodation, special places. If you are more into slow travel and authentic rural places, then you came across the right person.
Extra information:The length of the trip can vary from a few days to 2-3 weeks, above I've put 9 days as most people come for a week, bridging two weekends.
Further trip planning details:I can also suggest how to spend traditional Christmas and Easter holidays in Romania. Together with a friend we organize photography workshops, once per season in the Danube Delta in spring, Transylvania in summer, Bucovina in autumn and Maramures in winter.
